By 1957 the once-popular all-star traveling jam session Jazz at the Philharmonic was primarily performing in Europe but fortunately producer Norman Granz documented some of the concerts. This out-of-print LP matches together trumpeter Roy Eldridge, altoist Benny Carter and the complementary but contrasintg tenors of Coleman Hawkins and Don Byas with pianist Lalo Schifrin, bassist Art Davis and drummer Jo Jones. There are some fireworks on lengthy versions of "Take the 'A' Train," "Indiana" and a blues that is wittily titled "A Jazz Portrait of Brigitte Bardot" along with a four-song ballad medley. Everyone plays up to par and, considering the talent involved, that is saying a lot.
