Decent follow-up to American Idiot. But, in my humble opinion, it is not at the same level.

While the album is a bit less focused than some of their previous works, it is still a great follow-up that does a great job continuing and somewhat improving the style Green Day has perfected in American Idiot.

Green Day are back with their Rock Opera opus 2, and it holds up very well against American Idiot, which is hard not to compare it to. They take a step back from the hard-hitting and mature songs and they don't take themselves too seriously which is refreshing, especially when this came out, you wouldn't have heard anything like it. It's like the 90s Green Day fused with AI, and it's a great blend, and this time there's actually some kind of story, you don't fill in the gaps this time which proves their songwriting ability. They got punk, ballads, and whatever Peacemaker is but it's a rollercoaster that doesn't slow down, and keeps your attention every minute.

21st century breakdown could be the great album. Well, Lyrically this is one of the best albums and of course musically they have grown up, but in my opinion the album doesn't need to be as long as it is. It seems that Green Day made almost every song artificially longer and stable. And another the main problem is that this album is too neat and synchronized. Well, Green Day is one of the most influential bands of punk rock history and they just don't have to be too neat and clean. On the bright side this really is quite a good album, I would even say a great album with big ideas and catchy, entertaining music

American Idiot was a god-given masterpiece. It was a top notch rock opera, something we didn't hear very much of at the start of the 21st century. Then, 5 years later, here came this rock opera that is, in some ways, better than American Idiot. There are more songs, which means more variety and more music, and there is only one unnecessary tune and therefore one miss: See the Light. The rest of the songs are exactly what you expect Green Day to be: raw, loud, angry, rebellious, and in some tunes, sentimental. American Idiot was a great album, yes, but not only is it shorter than it should be, there's also some unnecessary tunes (Extraordinary Girl), combined with misses in general. (I am still trying to find a purpose for Whatsername, other than being a filler) If you love Green Day, this album is not to be missed. This is their true masterpiece.

As difficult as it may have been to follow up their successful 2004 release, Green Day manages to pull through with yet again another concept album that delivers that serious Green Day drive that we all love (some thanks goes to Chris Lord-Alge!). It may not live up to the standards [for all listeners] of it's predecessor, American Idiot, but a good 3/4 of this record really slams. Great songwriting, great production value, just missing missing that bit of uniqueness that would have set it apart from the previous album. Not the best, but definitely an underrated record.

Tavan25 1/9/16I love this album! 21st Century Breakdown is a step up from American Idiot!! The songs are fun and enjoyable! This album kept their career going after the massive success of American Idiot!
