Originally titled The Tenor Stylings of Bill Barron, this set was tenor saxophonist Barron's debut as a leader after recently leaving Cecil Taylor's band. Teamed up with trumpeter Ted Curson, younger brother Kenny Barron (then just 17 but already talented) on piano, bassist Jimmy Garrison (just prior to joining John Coltrane), and drummer Frankie Dunlop, Bill Barron plays music that falls between advanced hard bop and the free jazz of Ornette Coleman. His seven originals (which include the previously unreleased "Desolation") are often complex, but consistently swing and contain plenty of unpredictable solos. Excellent music.
