While the judgment about what constitutes the "best" of a given artist's work may be subjective, it doesn't seem much of a stretch to state that the Platinum Collection album The Best of Lionel Hampton, Vol. 2 does not live up to its name. To most fans, Hampton's best probably would date from the 1940s; this collection appears to come from the ‘70s. Here and there among the 20 tracks are some instances of Hampton's energetic vibraphone playing. But there's also a lot of miscellaneous pop (Hampton performing "Hello, Dolly!," for instance), and some of the tracks may not feature Hampton at all. Anyone encountering the wah-wah guitar-driven version of Buddy Miles' "Them Changes" who wonders where it fits into the Hampton discography is not alone. While a series of LPs was released by Brunswick Records in the early ‘70s under Hampton's name, one of them entitled Them Changes, some jazz historians, notably Vincent H. Pelote, librarian of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, dispute the assertion that they really are Hampton recordings. That should be some comfort to the musician's fans, but no reason to buy this fly-by-night collection.
